How to Cozy Up Your Home After Christmas

December 27, 2022

So, you’ve taken down all your Christmas decor and suddenly the home feels…bare. Sometimes taking down the Christmas decor can leave people feeling sad. For one, it’s a reminder that the fun holiday season is over and for another, it feels very empty. Today on the blog, I’m sharing how to cozy up your home after Christmas.

Bring in greenery and live plants. I think one of the biggest reasons our homes feel bare during the winter is because we removed the plants and “life” that was there during Christmas. More than likely, most of our Christmas decor is green so finding ways to add that back in other forms, especially forms of live plants can really combat that feeling of emptiness.

Add blankets for texture and added coziness. Blankets not only help with warmth and feeling cozy, but they also help with texture. Doing something as simple as changing the blankets in your space can have a huge impact on the overall mood of the space. For me, I switched out blankets in our bedroom and moved it into the living room and all of a sudden the living room felt fresh and new again.

Light a candle or a fire. Or turn on a lamp. When Christmas decor is all boxed up and put away, more than likely we had lights on whatever we were decorating and that usually makes the space feels darker. This simple task of lighting a candle or fire brings so much warmth back to your space, not just figuratively but literally too. When the “after the holiday’ blues creep in, lighting a simple fire or candle can bring back that warmth that is missing especially through these cold winter months. For me, seeing the slow peaceful movement of the fire calms me and makes me feel so much better. I know it’s simple to see it written out, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t ever light their fireplaces!

Tidy up. For me, this one is huge this year. If you have kids, then you know the place can be left a disaster after Christmas. Sometimes it takes rethinking the space and finding extra ways to hide and store those toys. Maybe it’s time to switch things around if things are feeling stale.

New art. Art can be the purest way to express yourself so incorporating new pieces that are meaningful to you can give you a sense of pride and purpose. Art makes my world go around and any time I’m feeling like something is “missing” in a space, I usually gravitate towards that when I’ve done everything else! If you are looking for some art inspiration, here is an old post.

Hope these simple tips will help you get over those holiday blues and make you start loving your home again!
